Heading out in 10 days....can't wait. Do we need to pack a lightweight jacket? We didn't need one in Maui in July, wondering if Kauai is any different. Flying Alligent so we have to pay for ALL our bags, traveling light this time! One destination mentioned in this post we would wear a light jacket on the plane, it gets a bit cold for us, but seldom on island. We have brought them with us on the Napali Trips, as it can get a bit chilled on the return, not to mention taking on spray. But, this would be on the return to port allen, the rest of the time, just board shorts or maybe a tank top. For others, who come in the winter, a light jacket can help out early mornings, or if hiking or site seeing up in Koke'e. Also as visitors we would arrive back at LAX in the evening hours, and the light jacket came in handy there as well. Actually, I can take that jacket while in the airport, and roll it up, and put it into the outside webbing of my carry on back pack.

Regardless, it does not take up any room in my travel duffle. I'm very cold natured so I bring a hoodie on the plane, wear long pants and pack a beach towel in our carry on to cover up with or use as a pillow while sleeping. Other than that - I have used the long pants for horse back riding and very early morning boat rides. I'm with Denny - except when I travel during the winter I bring my 3 in 1 REI coat. The outer layer is a thin waterproof jacket & the inner layer is a knit nylon material about the same weight as a sweatshirt. I've worn each layer separately on island but you can zip them together. If I'm traveling in the summer, I usually wear a light weight flannel shirt on the plane over my t-shirt or tank top. Summer is just too hot for any sort of jacket...unless you are headed to England & Ireland :-) My plan is to buy one on Kauai if needed as a souvenir and save the space in the luggage, didn't need to buy one last Sept and probably wont this Sept, you also might buy one at a thrift shop then donate it back when you leave

Usually you need one on the plane - so if you can bring a light jacket or even better IMO, a pashmina type scarf over for that reason without taking up a lot of space - again IMO that is really the only time you are going to use it during our summertime weather. The exception would be if you go up to the Waimea Canyon early in the morning, when it is in the 50's. I have 2 sweatshirts and one fleece jacket (which I take on MY vacation every year, the rest of the time it resides in my closet!) - I wear them probably 2-3 times a year, and only during our coldest winter weather, usually at night over my light nightclothes.nervo hoodie I generally don't even wear long sleeves here, let alone sweatshirts! gucci ghetto hoodieBut everyone is different, so if you have "cold blood" (lol) - then you might want them or a sweatshirt when it dips waaay down into the low 70's at night here! pcd hoodie

I just came back from a trip to the mainland last week - and I took a pashmina type scarf to wrap around my shoulders on the plane - and I needed it! Again, the only time it sees the light of day is when I'm flying outside the state! We just got back on Monday and I was surprised that I needed my husbands jacket a few times toward the end of our trip. I generally always bring a jacket for the freezing plane ride.
