David Conroy, 46, was heading home from his girlfriend's house in Wigan, Greater Manchester, when he noticed a flat-bed truck approaching him on the other side of the road.Sharp edges on the 20ft roofing panels had cut through one of the straps holding them down and one suddenly swung outwards into Mr Conroy's path - straight towards his head. The quick-thinking biker, who was riding his Suzuki GSXR 600, managed to duck out of the way after spotting the panels at the last second.His cameras on his bike filmed the moment the metal came within inches of his face and the footage also shows a pedestrian narrowly avoiding being hit while walking on the pavement. Mr Conroy, a dispatch officer from Wigan, said: 'I had only just set off when I noticed this truck coming towards me.'As it approached I noticed the panels had begun to move. me in any danger.'If it would have hit me it could have hit my head or shoulder. 'It was lucky that I had only just set off and so was only going around 20mph – if I had been going at any speed and that had hit me it could have taken my head off. The panel (circled) could have hit his head or shoulder if he hadn't moved out of the way on his bike Mr Conroy said it could have been 'fatal' if the panels on the truck had not missed him on the road in Wigan'I didn't realise until I re-watched the footage that someone was walking past on the pavement at the same time too and it could have hit them.'They didn't have a helmet on so that could have been a nasty injury if it had made contact – thankfully it didn't.'It could have been fatal had it happened a couple of seconds further up the road and not missed me or the pedestrian. A freak accident could have had tragic results really.' The director of the fencing company who own the truck explained that the roofing panels had been appropriately secured when the driver had set off and the moment they became free they pulled over.
