We’re all well-used to seeing them on the beaches of Cornwall in July – but so soon in June? Yet with many exams now finishing early – IGCSEs in particular – this is a sight that comes around more quickly each year. And it’s only natural for us teachers too to feel a few pangs when the little horrors suddenly leave school. But there are benefits. At last it’s time for some straight talking. There’s nothing like knowing you’re never going to see a teenager again to prompt some wise words on what you really think of them. And, contrary to expectation, rather than aiming to settle a few old scores (“Thank Goodness you’re going: I never liked you anyway!”), I find I’m usually reduced to an “all is forgiven” mode by these farewells.
