Das wird eine tierische Sensation, ein irres HAI-light für Köln und die Region: Der Kölner Eishockey-Club (KEC) ist mit dem Zoo im Gespräch, ein Haifischbecken zu errichten, um einem prächtigen Riffhai eine neue Heimat zu schenken. Es wäre das zweite lebende Maskottchen im Riehler Tierpark: Hai folgt Hennes! Dieses spektakuläre Vorhaben erfuhr EXPRESS von KEC-Geschäftsführer Peter Schönberger (49). Der Eishockey-Manager hat nicht nur von Amts wegen ein großes Herz für Haie, sondern ist auch begeisterter Taucher und so den Raubfischen eng verbunden: „Ich bin mal auf den Malediven mit Riffhaien getaucht und war von den Tieren, die von Natur aus Menschen gegenüber sehr friedlich sind, fasziniert.“ Aus Liebe zu den Geschöpfen und aus Sympathie für Haischutz-Organisationen wie „Sharkproject“ reifte die Idee, ein Exemplar nach Köln zu holen: „Der Hai sollte natürlich eine gewisse Größe haben. Riffhaie können ja knapp zwei Meter lang werden. Entsprechend aufwendig wäre dann so ein Haifischbecken.“

Und so ein Haifischbecken verschlingt Hunderttausende Euro: Vergleichsobjekte haben bis zu 15 Meter Länge und 100 000 Liter Wasser, rundherum tonnenschwere Scheiben, dazu ständige Kontrolle durch Tierpfleger und Techniker. Ist solch eine Tierhaltung in Köln überhaupt denkbar? Theo Pagel, Kölns Zoodirektor und als Präsident des Verbandes Deutscher Zoodirektoren auch mit der Hai-Thematik vertraut, bestätigt immerhin, dass es derzeit „Diskussionen“ zu dem Thema gebe. Klar ist: Ein Hai wäre ein absoluter Publikumsmagnet für den Zoo und den KEC. Ein atemberaubendes Anschauungsobjekt für Studenten, Schulklassen und Kitas. Ein idealer Infopoint für Organisationen, die sich für den Haischutz starkmachen. Klar ist aber auch: Maskottchen „Sharky“, das seit 16 Jahren mit akrobatischen Eistanzeinlagen Stimmung macht, braucht sich um seinen Job nicht zu fürchten. Schönberger: „Er hat jetzt ja Freundin »Sharkeline« dabei – und die zwei kommen gut an.“
