"I Want You Back" was the fourth single released by iconic[1][2] Australian rock group Hoodoo Gurus from their debut album Stoneage Romeos. It was released on Big Time Records (distributed by EMI) in March, 1984 (at same time as the album). "I Want You Back" was written by Dave Faulkner.[3] The B-Side "Who Do You Love?" (a.k.a. "Hoodoo You Love?") was recorded live by 2JJJ. The single was released in the United Kingdom in 1984 by Demon Records, but with an alternative B-Side, "Be My Guru". " "I Want You Back" was one of the few songs of mine to ever be covered by another artist, a fellow mysteriously named Simon F, produced by Billy Idol's then-guitarist Steve Stevens (do you miss the 80's?). Some writers refer to their creations as their 'children', well this felt more akin to having your child grow up to be a serial killer. Their (per)version was not a hit, but then neither was ours." "I Want You Back" was Hoodoo Gurus first hit in America, reaching number three on the college radio charts.

I can still recall the time She said she was always mine Then she left (as people do), And forgets what we've been through (Does this sound familiar to you?) It's not that she's gone away
It's the things I hear she has got to say About me, and about my friends When we've got no defense. That's her, I'll never believe her again. She might have deceived all my friends I know they will see in the end What it all means when she says (yeah!) It also veers into screaming primitivism and chugging power pop, with Dave Faulkner brandishing a Kinksy snide quality. Such mood swings are key: The South Pacific-set “Leilani” and the creature-feature menace of “Dig It Up” both play up the band’s kitschy side, but “My Girl” goes the opposite way with its sweetly chiming heartache. These songs make a point of flexing their outsized range without sacrificing the band’s inherent cheekiness.
I first heard this album as the soundtrack to "Beyond Blazing Boards" the surf video. I was hooked immediately and have bought and re-bought this album no less than 10 times because someone has always snaked it from me. Top to bottom this album is great. Every song has hooks and bridges in it that will have you chiming along after the first play. "Leilani" is probably the most popular and I'd agree it's great but not to be missed is "Let's all Turn On", "I want you back", "Zanzibar", "In the Echo Chamber" and "I was a kamikaze pilot". Don't nit pick here - download the whole album. My Girl, Zanzibar... the album is full of great 80's music! Agree with the reviews that this the best Gurus album. Good start to trying this group out. This album one of my top 5. Leilani- awesome and hilarious. Try keeping tojo out of your head, or lip sinc'ing -lets all turn on-. Great stuff by the boys, just wish I would have been old enough to see them live in the states. Formed: 1981 in Sydney, New South Wales, AustraliGenre: RockYears Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10sFull Bio
