August 24, 2016 CHRIS MONTANINI\LONDONER\POSTMEDIA NETWORK After buying and selling gently used children’s clothing at Once Upon a Child on Wellington Road for the past 18 years, local franchisees Scott and Lisa Doerr have opened a similar retail outlet for young adults called Plato’s Closet. Much like Once Upon a Child, US-based Winmark Corporation supports Plato’s closet, the same franchisor responsible for Play it Again Sports, Music Go Round and Style Encore. Plato’s Closet, which can offer customers cash for trendy, gently used name brand fashion for teens and twenty-something’s, officially opened at 1071 Wellington Road August 25, not far from the Doerr’s first venture.
“We’re quite used to this concept,” said Scott Doerr, a Fanshawe College professor who along with wife Lisa, co-owns Once Upon a Child and Plato’s Closet with his parents, Doug and Geri Doerr. “I think what’s amazing about it is that it has a very positive impact on the community. We give people a place to get cash for clothes they are not using anymore. That puts money back into the London community.” The purchase price of brand name clothing brought to Plato’s Closet is determined by software provided to the store by Winmark. Scott said the store does have to pass on some items. The most successful items have been in retail stores within the past 12 to 18 months. But offering an opportunity to turn extra shoes, belts, purses, jewellery and other items into cash on the spot is an attractive feature for families. “Plato’s Closet fills a distinct niche in the retail market,” Lisa said. “The great thing about the concept is that consumers are always looking for ways to stretch their dollar and Plato’s Closet lets them save money in two ways.”
