On Tuesday, October 25, 2016 grant-funded community health system partners are teaming up with the American Cancer Society and the NFL to launch their third nationwide breast cancer event -- A Crucial Catch Day -- to provide breast cancer education and free or low-cost screenings within underserved communities. The following grant-funded communities will provide outreach, education, and breast cancer screenings on Tuesday, October 25: Asbury Park, NJ; Once again, in 2016, youth and high school teams around the country will support A Crucial Catch with fundraising events at and around their games. Since 2009, the first year of the NFL’s "A Crucial Catch" campaign, the NFL’s work has raised nearly $15 million for the American Cancer Society, with the majority of the contribution coming from the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness-identified pink merchandise at retail and via the NFL Auction website.

The NFL does not profit from the sale or auction of breast cancer awareness-identified ("Pink") merchandise. Beginning with the 2011 season, money raised via the “A Crucial Catch” campaign has supported the American Cancer Society’s Community Health Advocates implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) program. This program promotes health equity and addresses cancer screening disparities through community based cancer prevention and early detection programs that increase access to breast cancer screenings. The program officially launched in 2012 within 17 communities across the country (each within 100 miles of an NFL city) where data showed that the population had lower breast cancer screening rates and higher mortality rates relative to other communities. In 2016, communities near each of the 32 teams will receive CHANGE grant funding. 1.
