Joseph Junior Adenuga has spent 2016 releasing a chart-topping album from his living room, winning the Mercury Prize with it and having his abrasively intelligent grime music played everywhere from Wembley Stadium (by Beyoncé) to The Globe (thanks to former artistic director Emma Rice), while performing internationally.

At last, the Tottenham-raised rapper had come home. Grime, the UK equivalent of hip-hop, has been the sound of housing estates since its emergence with the millennium. But Adenuga has rightfully been held responsible for taking onto a global stage. In the process, he’s rebranded British authenticity for the US music industry as something to be found in lived experience, a hoodie and trainers. It was in this uniform that the 34-year-old took to the expansive stage and broke into the sparse, astute songs from Konnichiwa, his fifth album and the first grime record to win the Mercury since Dizzee Rascal collected the gong in 2003. The sense of boy done good fuelled the efficient 75-minute set. Comeback hit That’s Not Me was performed against a backdrop of its £80 music video – and a lighting rig that cost far more. Adenuga’s flow was emphatic and his narration – of new-found fame, the impact it has on women – was enthralling. But, even from the boisterous scrum of the crowd, it felt as if we were watching a party take place, rather than participating in it ourselves.

Instead of record label honchos, Adenuga relies on his “family”, a musical collective called Boy Better Know, for support. And he brought them and a Who’s Who of grime royalty – including his brother JME, Novelist, Wretch 32 and Lethal Bizzle – on stage for lyrical tête-à-têtes. But while fire raged onstage – a car burned behind the dozens of men who came out for the finale, a nod to Kanye West’s controversial Brits performance – the atmosphere fizzled on the floor. Skepta keeps his distance from fame; it is family, he explained, that is everything. As he outlined in Man, he only socialises with the crew and the gang.
