For major events (i.e. movie premieres, conventions) we make shirts for ourselves. Our first LeakyCon we made ourselves shirts for all four days. I was wearing a homemade Ron Weasley shirt the day I met John Green. We made shirts for the premieres of both Hunger Games movie, and we’ll probably make new ones for the next two. Tonight is The Night Before Our Stars, the premiere event for The Fault In Our Stars movie. Sissy and I have been looking forward to this since we first found out the book was being made into a movie, and if any occasion calls for a handmade shirt, it’s definitely this one. You want to pick a graphic that isn’t too fussy or detailed, because you’re going to have to cut that out with your X-acto knife.

Silhouettes work best, because doing multicolored work would be time consuming and inexact. Now of course you could do layers of stencils if you wanted to get more detail, but I love the look of a clean, one-color silhouette graphic. For today’s shirts we did a grenade, for the analogy Hazel makes in the book. As I said in my previous TFIOS, we’ve all felt like grenades every now and then. I thought the symbol was appropriate. Trace the graphic onto a piece of wax paper, making sure to draw on the non-sticky side. Notice in my grenade graphic I have little breaks in the circle part of the pin? That’s because you need the part of the stencil that won’t be painted not to come completely away when you cut. Pay attention to how your graphic is constructed, and what parts are being cut out. The first time we made our Mockingjay shirts we had to do the stencils twice, so if you’re unsure draw out two wax paper stencils right away, for trial and error. Once your stencil is all cut out (and see those few little breaks I left to keep the stencil together?) iron it onto your shirt.

Set the iron to the appropriate heat level for your shirt, but not too high that you’ll melt the paper. I usually have synthetic shirts (Wal Mart hoodies are $12, and tee shirts are $6) so the heat setting is low.
hsk hoodiesWe’ve done cotton before and the paper hasn’t melted, so you should be safe at that setting as well.
c20 hoodiesMake sure the thin wiggly bits of your stencil are in the right place before you iron them down.

Double check thinner parts of the stencil to make sure they’re lying flat and all the way ironed on. Apply paint over the top of the stencil.
eluveitie hoodiesWe prefer the sponge brushes to paint brushes because it’s easier to dab the paint on, leaving the stencil undisturbed. Keep in mind you may need to do multiple coats of paint, and the wetter your stencil gets the more likely it is to bubble and lift away from the shirt. Try to apply the first coat thin and light and then doing the second coat thicker to save yourself from messing up the nice clean lines of your graphic. Our grenade shirts took two coats of paint and still look a little heathered, but I actually think it’s a really cool look. When the paint has dried enough that it won’t smear (an hour or two depending on the thickness and numbers of paint layers) you can peel up the stencil. Try to peel in a direction that will lift the whole thing without having to pick at a part that’s sitting in paint.

In other words, not the way the picture above is showing. they’re not reusable unfortunately. Fill in the blanks with the edge of your sponge brush or a paint marker. For these particular shirts we wanted to add a quote, but were too lazy to cut it out of wax paper. We just used a plain old fabric marker, and I called up my best grade school cursive. The shirts we bought were softer than your standard Hanes tee, so the tip of the marker got fuzzy. You have to be careful how the marker strokes (ba dum bum tss), instead of dragging it all the way through each letter I brushed upwards and filled in the downstrokes in small bits. You can see the finished tee shirt in the header image, or keep an eye on our Twitter for a selfie of me and Sissy from The Night Before Our Stars tonight. I can’t guarantee that the shirts won’t be soaked in tears. I can’t guarantee that my tweets won’t be soaked in tears, but at least they’ll be entertaining. Think you’ll try something like this?
