The 6-foot-5 guard isn’t penciled into the starting five. Pflueger plays with the reserve team in scrimmages. The Mater Dei (Calif.) High School product had to adjust to a different team, league and level of competition when he arrived at Notre Dame. Most of Pflueger’s playing time in non-conference play was limited to mop-up duty after the starting five had already carved out a sizable lead.

Pflueger remained on the bench for 40 minutes when the Irish traveled to Virginia for their ACC opener on Jan. 2. “It was very tough,” said Pflueger, “but I had a lot of great people behind me telling me I had to keep my head up and wait for my time to come. Honestly, like people say, patience is a virtue.” The teammate who reminded Pflueger his time would come is the consummate example of the freshman he wants to be. And after Irish coach Mike Brey turned to forward Bonzie Colson during Notre Dame’s road trip to Georgia Tech last January — 364 days before Wednesday’s contest against the same opponent — the then-freshman seized his opportunity and never looked back. Colson explained to Pflueger the importance of performing at a high-level in practice. Brey praised Colson’s practice habits for weeks before he eventually went with the forward. After listening to Colson, the freshman guard’s outlook on practice and his time on the bench changed. “He waited his turn during ACC play and then he just blew up,” Pflueger said.

“He competed every single day in practice. He proved that he deserved to be out there on the court, and he’s really been kind of like a model for what I’ve been striving for this year.” Colson is what Brey refers to as “an energy guy;” the kind of player whose style lends itself to situations when the team is sputtering. Pflueger’s traits are similar, and he also gives the Irish a boost at the end of the floor where they need it most. “We love his energy and his activity, especially on the defensive end,” said junior wing V.J. Beachem. “Any time he can come in and give us that spark is great for us.” But Pflueger’s spark flickered early in the year. Some of his mistakes stemmed from playing too fast on the offensive end, which hurt his performance and his confidence. But his play elevated to another level when he overcame the growing pains. Now the Irish, sitting at 10-5 (1-2 ACC) with a struggling defense, are in a position where the freshman guard might be needed to provide the team with a boost.

He logged nine minutes in both of the previous two games and is set to feature against Wednesday night. “I think he grew week to week and wasn’t as emotional as he was the first couple weeks of practice when he was making mistakes, and he would get really down on himself,” said Irish assistant coach Martin Ingelsby. “I think he matured in that area and that helped his overall game as far as making good decisions, and it’s helped his shooting. “And I think his presence, his energy on the defensive end, that’s where he felt he could make an impact, and obviously with our defensive numbers being where they are and him coming off the bench and helping us on the defensive end, that’s become an important part for us.” Pflueger’s height and quickness allow him to mark a range of players effectively. The 6-foot-5 freshman reminds Ingelsby of junior guard Steve Vasturia, whom New York Knicks point guard Jerian Grant hated to play against in practice. Vasturia isn’t the fastest, biggest or most intimidating presence on the court, but the Medford, N.J., native is an intelligent defender who maneuvers his way into good positions.

Pflueger finds ways to do the same. “I think he gives us versatility defensively being able to guard multiple positions,” Ingelsby said. “Like Steve (Vasturia) would do to Demetrius (Jackson) and Jerian last year, I think he can really frustrate guys with good body positions. That’s something we really kept an eye on as we moved into ACC play. We always have to have that availability for us for him to go in and guard some of the best perimeter guys in our league.” Brey said after Notre Dame’s loss to Pittsburgh that he might revisit the starting lineup and tinker with different options if the poor defensive displays and slow starts continue. Then he mentioned Pflueger’s name. “The one thing (Austin) Torres and Pflueger do is they guard,” Brey said. “They put their chest in there and they guard, and that’s why we’ve liked them in the rotation right now. Again, we’ve got to keep growing Pflueger. He gives us something there. We’ve got to stay on them and stay after them, and if we can’t get it enough to start then maybe we have to start differently.
