'I made £2.5m selling other people's junk on eBay' David Brackin and his business partner Fraser started their eBay career 11 years ago with nothing but a camera and some bubble wrap In 2004, armed with a bumper roll of bubble wrap and a digital camera, David Brackin and his business partner Fraser Pearce began selling items online. They sold things that people left behind when they moved house and which they couldn't be bothered to advertise, package up, and sell. Back in those days, people thought of internet shopping as a “wild west” and it was avoided by many. Ebay - which is 20 this year - was a far smaller auction site. The pair, who went by the name “Stuff U Sell”, had spotted an opportunity. They sold anything and everything online – doing the packing and selling – for a healthy 30pc cut of the sale price. In the first year the pair sold £5,000 worth of goods, making less than £2,000 between them. But as demand for their services ratcheted up, the business grew and by year two they had started employing people to move and pack the items.

David and Fraser are now among 2,000 British eBay “millionaire ” sellers. To achieve this status a business needs an annual turnover of at least $1m (£660,000). When they started their operation out of a spare bedroom 11 years ago they didn’t imagine they’d have sold £7m of stock by today, translating into profits of around £2.5m. Fraser now lives in Equador, but still plays a major part managing the business. David remains in Britain. Neither has “done any of the heavy lifting” for some time. They’ve sold everything from Christian Louboutin shoes to architectural salvage items such as chimney pots and mantle pieces. Peculiar sales have included an 8ft high statue of Star Wars character Jar Jar Binks statue and an old printing press - which was then a prop in the second Sherlock film.

• A new and surprisingly good deal that savers can exploit Their single most valuable sale was of an entire fitted kitchen, which fetched £30,000. David says their secret to making good money is largely that they price things “properly”. He says the days ofsetting ultra-low auction start prices, such as 99p, are dying out.

“If you think something’s worth £100, start the bidding at £100,” he says. “The only time when a 99p auction might work in your favour is if you’re selling something like an iPhone, where you know there’s super high demand and you could sell it today or tomorrow in the click of a finger.” • eBay turns 20: Here are 20 things you may not know katie.morley@telegraph.co.uk
