Because Drake is Drake. However you feel about his music, there's no denying that Toronto is Drake's City. In fact, it became official when the rapper got the key to the city on Friday at the Air Canada Center. But between his constant lyrical shout outs to Toronto (excuse me, "the 6") and his posse of almost all Toronto natives, he's also the city's unofficial ambassador of cool. So when Drake's latest collaboration with Air Jordan released in his hometown on Saturday, it's no surprise that people were excited.
And though Drake is one of the most powerful pop culture figures alive today, even he couldn't control the fact that Saturday was also the coldest day of the year, with windchill-induced temps dipping near—who knows, it was really effing cold. Or the fact that I really, really, really wanted to buy the true all-star of the capsule apparel collection: the black hoodie with an embroidered gold Jumpman logo on the front, and October's Very Own owl mascot on the hood. I ended up going to the extreme to get it. The first stop was the Jordan pop-up shop at 306 Yonge Street. By the time GQ photo editor Alex Reside and I arrived, the main attraction from the OVO x Jordan collection—the stingray-embellished Air Jordan X sneaker—was long gone. People had camped out for days to buy them, but considering my needs for just a hoodie were much more humble, I figured the odds were in my favor. But there's nothing quite as demoralizing as arriving to a store set against sub-zero temperature weather just to see a line wrapping around the block.
"Should we just, wait?" Truthfully, as a writer at a major men's fashion magazine, I'm extremely spoiled when it comes to the whole "waiting in line to buy clothes" thing. But in Canada, even with half of the New York media scene in town, I was plug-less. So, I had no choice but to wait or go home hoodie-less.Luckily, within in a few minutes the line moved inside the mall, where I'd spend the next hour stepping over discarded Tim Horton's wrappers and soda bottles (wreckage from last night's campers). But nothing could prepare me for the heartbreak once finally inside the store. "Yeah, we're sold out" one of the store's employees said with painful casualness. I never stood a chance. So, I bought an OVO x Jordan beanie to ease my pain, but much like eating a bite of food can actually make you more hungry than if you'd eaten nothing at all, I now wanted the hoodie more than ever. So, I decided to fire up a plan B and hopped in an Uber across town to Drake's OVO store. After arriving to the store around 10:45, over an hour before its opening time, the thought of waiting outside in the cold seemed insane.
There was no one else at the store at the time, so Alex and I decided to do the only rational thing we could think of—go eat a really dope brunch. After filling our bellies with some of the best eggs, hash browns, bacon, and pancakes in town (the restaurant was called Old School by the way), we headed back to the store exactly at noon. Now, the line had wrapped around the store into the alley. There were only about 25 people ahead of me, but considering the OVO store is probably smaller than Drake's actual closet, I knew this wasn't going to be a fast-moving kind of situation. And hopped out of line to get hot cocoa at 7-Eleven. Then again to pop into a local hair salon for a few minutes, where the woman who owned the place was happy to accommodate myself and other line-up idiots because Canadians are nice. Still, it did little to save my toes from being completely numb within 30 minutes. Several people, friends of OVO I assume, showed up and simply walked in. Naturally, all of us regular folk groaned, pleaded, maybe questioned our very existence.
A few of us in line began using a huge guy in an even bigger fur coat as a sort of barometer for our progress. Once he was finally inside the store, an hour had passed, my hands were numb, and the idea of simply calling it a day and going back to the hotel to jump in bed seemed insanely tantalizing. I'd come way too far to give up now. You know that feeling of relief you get when warm shower water hits your back on a cold day? Multiply it by a thousand, and that's how good it felt to finally enter the store. Immediately, I told one of the shop's employees what I wanted. An OVO x Jordan Jumpman hoodie, and hell, a pair of black and gold OVO track pants for good measure. (I'd earned them, and the exchange rate, ya know?) Alex was directly behind me, and wisely grabbed the hoodie that was on display in the store. Turns out, he and I had purchased the last two, a fitting and triumphant ending to our journey. On his song "Facts," Kanye West raps "If Nike ain't have Drizzy man they would have nothin'."
