You can make whatever you want. That’s the freedom I get from making things. That’s why I like drawing it out, because my mind can go anywhere.You sketch out every item yourself?I draw out everything before I make it. From videos to clothes to certain shots for my pictures, I usually draw everything out. I’m actually a designer. It’s not a team of people. For the lookbook, I picked the background, I picked the outfit, I tell them how to pose, I set everything up, I do the finishing edits on all the photos. gimp hoodieI’m more hands-on than people think. I pick which pieces come out at the first drop. This is my clothing line.I’ll make a velour suit, because I’ve always wanted a baby blue velour suit and I was never able to get one when I was younger—and that’s why you have a velour suit. And that’s why you have overalls, because I like overalls, too. I’m friends with the rock kids who play guitar—I like rap, I like rock, I like jazz, so that’s why the line looks like that.

I know rich-ass dudes with old Goyards and Rolls-Royces, so I make trunks to put my emeralds and sapphires and cash in, but I also make T-shirts and crewnecks and hoodies. That’s why I’m so proud of it, that’s why I wear all of it.Your color sense is really crazy—how do you know something is a “Tyler” color?A lot of people like black and stuff, but I like bold colors. I use a lot of peach and mint. Colors play such a big part in my music and the way I think about things. They bring out certain moods. Pink is my favorite. It’s just a calming color to me. I have a pink Chanel wallet and it’s just like, Everything will be okay.I’m in Hawaii right now, and there are pink flowers right in front of me and the water is blue but it’s a darker blue than the sky, so there’s a contrast. And then there’s all this green in the middle. It just plays such a big part in everyday life, and I just feel like more people should use it instead of using just black and gray.Do you think everyone can pull off some of the crazier looks and colors in your line?

I think anyone can pull off anything if they really believe it. Take André 3000, for example. He’s worn some crazy left-of-field stuff, but it looks really cool on him. Because he believes in it.I think that’s why Kanye looks normal in his Yeezy stuff. Because he believes in it. Which is why I respect Kanye. I think that’s tight. It feels right to him and that’s all that matters.You’re making girls’ clothing specifically now, but a lot of it even feels like either a boy or a girl could wear it. I’ve always wanted to make girls’ stuff. Sometimes girl clothes are cooler than guy clothes; they use cooler colors and patterns. It’s stupid we live in this society in which guys aren’t able to wear the cool colors and patterns—we’re just supposed to wear black. The purse—I just always wanted to make a purse. A lot of girls I know, they always have Chanel bags and all this type of stuff, so I want them to walk their little red carpet things with one of my bags. I thought, What kind of purses do I like?

Oh, I like clutches? So I drew it up. I’ve been looking at purses, my mom’s purses, or whatever, since I was a kid.Is there anybody you wanted to dress like when you were younger?R. Kelly.Are there any other brands you check for?I don’t know many designers, but one guy who’s stood out for me since I was younger is Jeremy Scott. I love the way his brain thinks. I met him once and I fanned out and I took a photo with him. He didn’t know who I was, but he’s really awesome.There’s my boy Mikey [Alfred] at Illegal Civilization. The message is really cool—it’s a bunch of skateboarders, but he wants kids to know it’s cool to be smart and be on their shit. He makes cool things like cardigans. It’s really cool—he’s only 20. He’s a skate kid handling his business. I like this brand Lazy Oaf from London. We make similar stuff sometimes. I love old BBC Ice Cream, between 2004 and 2007. I loved the color they used. They allowed it to breathe some. Polo is cool, they come up with really cool items sometimes.

I like Chanel, the stuff they do for girls, and Prada has really cool ads. I went to this store called Opening Ceremony two weeks ago, and there was so much stuff that I heard about but never seen, like Raf Simons. A$AP Rocky is my friend and I heard him say Raf Simons before, but I never knew what it was. I was like, “This is $80,000—oh my, God.” The lady was schooling me, telling me that people really buy this expensive stuff—what’s in, what’s popular, what’s not. It’s not my thing, but I thought it was a cool place, to realize that there’s a whole ’nother world. I didn’t know what Acne Studios was until I went there.The clothes look so young, but do you ever think you’ll make proper grown-up gear?Man, I don’t know. The more I travel, the older I get, shit changes. I know I will be making suits in the future. I’ll make a pair of boots in the future.
