Synthetic has always been intended to mimic down (often poorly), but now The North Face and Primaloft have teamed up to create a product that actually looks and acts like down, while maintaining loft in wet conditions. It’s called Thermoball, and The North Face is kicking it off this year with an entire collection of jackets, fleeces, and even booties for men and women. The Thermoball Hoodie is equivalent to 600-fill down, which was warmer than other synthetic down jackets, but quite a bit cooler than some of the newer down jackets on the market, which boast up to 1,000-fill down. This jacket seemed to be more compressible than other synthetic jackets too, but again, it still isn’t quite to the same level as down. There is one thing that this jacket has on down, and that’s performance in wet/damp conditions. Down just doesn’t work well when it gets damp or wet. Humid climates alone can really suck the life right out of down. That’s because when down gets wet, it loses its loft.
