The family’s home sits on the edge of the South Downs. ‘Fortunately for us, it wasn’t brilliantly listed on the internet, so it was easy to miss,’ says Sarah.Designer and presenter of BBC One’s Money For Nothing, Sarah lives in a three-bedroom house in West Sussex with her husband Pete and their children Harry, 13, Edward, 11, and Libby, nine, plus Bramble the black labrador. Sarah adds: ‘The details barely mentioned the barn and dairy that came with it. Sarah collected vintage fabrics long before she was on TV. She and a group of vintage trader friends now hold fairs in her barn. The runner is from Stable Antiques in Storrington (stableantiques.co.uk). )‘I’m trying to wean myself off florals,’ says Sarah Moore with a smile. ‘But I’m not sure it’s working very well…’ Sarah’s blossom-strewn fabric creations were the highlight of the BBC’s first The Great Interior Design Challenge and, while her style has flourished since she won the TV competition, she can’t quite say goodbye to the gorgeously blowsy patterns that made her name.

Muddy footprints welcome: Bramble makes herself at home on the upcycled sofa. Two vintage cider mugs mix well with traditional majolica cabbage plates, which belonged to Sarah’s grandparents. Find similar at Kempton Park (sunburyantiques. com) and Ardingly (iacf. co.uk) antiques fairs. The freestanding kitchen cabinet displaying treasures old and new was from a car boot sale; try Goose Home & Garden (goosehomeandgarden. com) for similar. ‘I picked these hedgerow flowers down the lane this morning,’ says Sarah. Sarah reupholstered the sofa in a patchwork of fabrics, adding the layers as and when she found them. ) so made her own version from a vintage Union Jack flag. The coffee table is a cut-down pine table bought in a Brixton junk shop. The bench was an Ebay find; Swoon Editions sells a similar style. But when Sarah picked up the keys and walked in, it sent shivers down her spine all over again – only not in a good way. ‘All manner of local wildlife had moved in,’ she says. Sarah and Pete stripped out every floor covering and painted over the swathes of 1980s magnolia with white, punctuated only by the cottage’s chunky beams.The décor was always going to reflect the setting but, says Sarah, ‘I’m not into the twee version of country style – the doilies, cupcakes and cherubs look.’ Her version sits happily with modern pops of colour, such as a kitchen cabinet painted in emerald green and a headboard in a lush royal blue.But what really shines through is how Sarah’s style is rooted in family life. Her quirky ceramics collection is full of hand-me-downs from her grandmother and the sofa’s layers of patchwork are simply ‘the quickest, easiest way to make things comfortable’.
