Zowel Douglas als McDonnell hadden het moeilijk na de Tweede Wereldoorlog door gemiste overheidsopdrachten en een oververzadigde markt met een surplus aan gevechtsvliegtuigen. Begin jaren 60 had Douglas het zeer moeilijk vanwege de kosten die gemaakt waren voor de burgerluchtvaarttoestellen DC-8 en DC-9. In 1963 begon overleg met McDonnell over een eventueel samengaan. Vanaf december 1966 kon er op Douglas worden geboden, waarna McDonnell werd gekozen als fusiepartner. In 1968 kwam het eerste vliegtuig van het gefuseerde bedrijf op de markt: de driemotorige DC-10. In 1977 kwam de DC-9-80 uit, die later werd hernoemd tot MD-80. Dit bleek een zeer succesvol toestel te zijn. De DC-10 werd opgevolgd door de MD-11, een verbeterde versie van de DC-10. Er werden er meer dan 200 van verkocht. Het laatste vliegtuig dat werd geproduceerd was een verlengde versie van de MD-80 series: de MD-90, die was uitgerust met International Aero Engines V2500 turbofans; de grootste achterop gemonteerde motoren ooit, op een commercieel vliegtuig.

Na de overname door Boeing bleef de verkorte versie van de MD-90, MD-95, het enige toestel dat in productie bleef: onder de naam Boeing 717. McDonnell Douglas produceerde door de jaren heen ook succesvolle militaire vliegtuigen als de F-15 Eagle (1974) en de F/A-18 Hornet (1975) en ook de Harpoon en Tomahawk kruisraketten. One day in 2012, after playing basketball with friends, I spotted a homeless man with no shoes on his feet. 

A sense of urgency came over me that nudged my soul to take action.  This nudge prompted me to take the sneakers off my feet, and offer them to this gentleman.  Feeling the gravel under his feet, nothing compared with the immense gratitude he experienced with this small act of kindness, as he returned a smile.  At that point, I realized there are many unfortunate people similar to his man, without so much as a decent pair of shoes.  I knew in my heart there had to be something more I could do to make their walk through life a little easier. ACCEPTAccept sneakers from donors, that are gently worn or in good condition. CLEANLaundry sneakers and shoes. REPLACEReplace the old insole with a new insole and shoestrings in the sneakers with new or clean shoestrings. DISTRIBUTEDistribute refurbished or new sneakers to those in need. For the first two and a half years I handled the collection, cleaning and distribution, alone and at my own expense.  

To aid in some of my efforts, I now recruit high school and college students, teaching them how to give back while performing community service for a cool organization. From the positive feedback I have been receiving, and most importantly, the expressions of appreciation from these recipients, I feel my small grass roots movement is poised for future growth. • IFTS, has given out over 17,000 pairs of sneakers to the homeless and less fortunate individuals in New York; • IFTS staged its annual giveaway event at Love Park, distributing 2,300 pairs of sneakers and also baseball caps, socks, and jeans all in one day, 2013. • IFTS is dedicated to distributing sneakers on a bi-weekly basis and have been committed to this effort for over the last year. • IFTS began distributing warm winter clothing and pillows have been added to the contributions for the homeless. • IFTS has participated in “Fashion For A Cause” to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief victims in 2012.
