After a hot start, Josh McDaniels’ time as the head coach of the Broncos came to a horrible end in 2010 when the team fired him in early December. The firing came shortly after McDaniels had a confrontation with cornerback Champ Bailey and linebacker D.J. Williams during practice. Six years later, Williams explained on a podcast with BSN Denver why players did not enjoy playing for McDaniels. “It’s like taking a course in school—it all depends on the teacher,” Williams recently said on a BSN Denver podcast. “It could be the easiest class or the hardest class. If this professor wants to give you pop quizzes randomly and essays, this is going to be the hardest class. If your professor is that professor that says, ‘Hey, we’re going to give a quiz on Friday, we’re going to talk about the subjects on Wednesday and Thursday,’ it’s smooth. Josh was the type of guy that, to me, made football tougher than it had to be.” Williams also said the team’s “fun” with McDaniels was scripted, taking away from its funness.

Williams was not solely critical, though, saying that McDaniels will likely go on to become a head coach again, a better one after learning from his mistakes. During McDaniels’ first stint as a head coach, he had trouble connecting with his players, according to Williams. “[Bill] Belichick seems kind of standoffish, but a lot of guys that I know that played with him, when [they’re] one-on-one with him, he’s relatable—you can talk to him,” Williams said of McDaniels’ mentor. “I don’t think Josh McDaniels [had] learned that yet, Josh got all the knowledge and came here with all the knowledge. That’s why we were successful in the beginning and won those games, but when it hit the fan and things got tough, guys didn’t want to go the extra mile for him.” The Broncos selected Williams out of Miami in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft. He went on to play eight seasons in Denver before joining the Bears in 2013 for the final two years of his career, retiring after recording 897 tackles and 22.5 sacks in ten seasons.
