titan cs go hoodiesOn Friday March 4th, the Detroit Fillmore was taken over by Hoodie Allen and his fans, (affectionately called the “Hoodie mob”) for the Happy Camper tour featuring SuperduperKYLE and Bryce Vine, who was replacing Blackbear, who left the tour due to a falling out with Hoodie Allen.
def leppard hoodie ukMy friends and I arrived to the Fillmore for the Happy Camper tour around 6 o’clock, an hour before doors were due to open, and walked to the end of the line, which seemed to never end. Luckily, one of my friends knew someone who was near the beginning of the line so we went back up to meet them, much to the chagrin of the people behind us.

The day was cold, and rainy, but excitement helped to distract from numb fingers and toes. The doors opened on time, and after walking through check in, the merch table was off to the right. where Hoodie Allen was doing free meet and greets for those who couldn’t afford or didn’t buy his VIP passes. I skipped the line and opted to get a spot in the general admission area near the stage. The area was almost full so my friends and I were in the back, but because the GA is so small it was still a good vantage point. The pre-concert playlist consisted the always Detroit classic “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem, which got the whole crowd swaying, then switched over to “Money Maker” by Ludacris and Pharrell. I wished I could dance but the gathering was so pressing I could just wave my hands in the air. Soon the lights dimmed and Bryce Vine took the stage with his DJ Skizz Marquee. Although I was excited to see Blackbear, who quit the Happy Camper Tour a week before the Detroit stop, Bryce Vine was a great act to see in his absence.

Bryce’s accomplishments included being a contestant on “The Glee Project”, along with a feature on the G-Eazy track “Coming Home” as well as a supporting act on tour for Karmin in 2014. At his Detroit show he was energetic, funny, and down-to-earth, repeatedly saying a song was new, before finally stating that it didn’t matter because the crowd “didn’t know who the f— he was.” Bryce claims that he loves performing for crowds who aren’t familiar with him because he enjoys watching excitement build. A few songs performed include “Los Angeles”, “Sour Patch Kids”, “Guilty Pleasure”, and “Where The Wild Things Are”. For those who missed this performance, you’re in luck; tickets just went on sale for his April 24th show at The Shelter, a general admission venue in Detroit. Tickets are just $12 each. After Bryce warmed up the audience, it was time for SuperduperKYLE (formerly known as K.I.D) to hit the stage. Kyle can be heard singing on chorus on the track “Monica Lewinsky” by G-Eazy featuring Skizzy Mars and on his own track “King Wavy” featuring G-Eazy.

His set began pitch black, the only light coming from two lightsabers held by Kyle and SuperduperBRICK, setting the scene for his first song “The Force” from his new album “Smyle”. Other songs played include “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love”, “Summertimesoul”, and “Superduperhero”, which featured dance choreography from Ian Eastwood performed by both Kyle and Brick. Ian has done work for Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino and Justin Bieber, to name a few. “If you know me, you know I like two things: sex and Super Smash Bros.” Kyle said this to introduce his song “Sex and Super Smash Bros”, a song using samples from the game, a video game theme that can be found in much of his music. This is a good song to listen to in order to understand Kyle’s musical vibe. “Really, Yeah?” is one of the songs on Smyle that creates a buzz and even those who were not familiar with the song got into it. Finally, to finish off the show, Kyle brings out a surfboard and crowd surfs shirtless in his shorts to “When Can We”.

I was lucky enough to be right up front and have Kyle perform right over me while holding the surfboard. Kyle and Brick are an entertaining act to see, with a great stage presence. Kyle’s last stop on the Happy Camper tour will be NYC on March 22 before he embarks on his own “Smyle” tour. He will be performing at the Recess Music & Ideas festival after party for free. Priority entry is given to those with a College ID. White and yellow strobe lights are flashing to a beat before finally, the headliner, Hoodie Allen, enters the stage, beginning with the Happy Camper theme song “Intro To Anxiety”, the first song on his newest album “Happy Camper”. Lights are flashing to the beat. Hoodie is wearing a yellow bandana with a melting smiley face, the tours logo. Hoodie also performed “Eighteen Cool”, which he later referenced towards a sign held up by two twin fans whose 18th birthday was that day. He asked them “Have you ever been sung happy birthday by 1600 people?” and had the audience serenade them.

Other highlights include Hoodie Allen tossing cake into audience during “Cake Boy” and Also on the setlist were “Surprise Party” featuring Blackbear and “Champagne and Pools” with both Blackbear and KYLE. Unfortunately, the songs were incomplete due to Blackbear’s absence, but guitarist Pat Brown helped to sing his parts. Hoodie rapped “All About It” sans Ed Sheeran, but fans helped Hoodie fill in the chorus. During “All About It” a yellow raft is pulled out and throw onto the crowd for Hoodie to climb in and he proceeds to raft around the audience. Hoodie is unfortunately shipwrecked and is thrown out his raft. He recovers swiftly and continues on with the show. After “King To Me” Hoodie leaves the stage, but soon returns for an encore to perform “No Interruption”. Confetti is dropped from the ceiling and after Hoodie leaves the stage his DJ, DJ Fresh Direct begins a rave, leaving the spirits high before everyone exits the Fillmore. Kyle was taking pictures and doing signings after the show and I was lucky enough to get a picture with him and have him sign my crew-neck.
