His sound pairs traditionally styled hip beats with modern vocal samples and inventive, intelligent lyrics to create a signature style. If you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind concert experience, purchase your Hoodie Allen tickets today! While he is primarily recognized by his stage name, Allen’s proper name is Steven Adam Markowitz. Born in 1988, Markowitz grew up on Long Island and experienced a passion for lyricism from a young age. By the time he had reached adolescence, Markowitz had gained notoriety among his friends for his lyrical ability. He began to freestyle at house parties and gatherings, further fueling his passion for music. After completing high school, Markowitz was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania and moved to State College to begin his undergraduate education. During his enrollment there, he found increasing success with his musical endeavors, gaining a wider audience for his freestyles and written songs. While at UPenn, Markowitz was able to use the burgeoning college social scene to his advantage in gaining an audience.
He pledged the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, and was often featured as an entertainer at its parties, performing for students. As an undergraduate, Markowitz also began to move more toward producing and recording his own music. In fact, while he was in college, Markowitz wrote, recorded and released three separate mixtapes, all of which received considerable exposure on the UPenn campus and in the surrounding areas. These included Bagels and Beats, Making Waves and Pep Rally, which were released in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively. As people around campus began to take note and flock to Markowitz’s shows, the outside world was also taking note of the rapper’s career. Driven largely by the success of the single “UPenn Girls,” Markowitz’s first two mixtapes earned a nomination from MTVU for a Best Music on Campus Award in 2009. Other work and career progression Markowitz graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010 and accepted a job at Google working in Adwords analytics.
