Martin Garrix Manager, SB Projects Michael George, an artist manager at SB Projects, is responsible for diversifying SBP’s management portfolio into the ever-expanding dance music genre. Showing an interest in alternative music from a young age, George began booking music acts at local venues in his hometown of Merrick, New York, as a freshman in high school. His first foray into management was with indie/hip-hop act Hoodie Allen. david and goliath bear hoodyOut of his bedroom in his parents’ house, George helped Hoodie build a thriving touring business and land a #10 Billboard debut album independently.freebook hoodie 92 George joined SB Projects in 2013, when Scooter Braun gambled on his keen eye for talent and sent him to Miami Music Week, where he discovered EDM breakout star Martin Garrix. Shortly after, George signed Garrix to SB Projects, in conjunction with Music All Stars Management.
Garrix’s single “Animals” hit #1 in the UK, was the highest-charting instrumental on Top 40 radio in the last 20 years, and has gone on to sell over 1.4 million copies in the US. Morgan Rock was uninterested in dorm cafeteria food and even less interested in cooking for herself. She ate out six times a week and then reserved the seventh day for leftovers. Now, Rock, a University of Central Florida junior from St. Petersburg, found herself in an unfamiliar place — the grocery store — as she shopped for food to stock the green rooms for the rappers who were coming to campus. Rock was among about 20 students who spent months setting up a rap show for their fellow students.True, they don't get paid as volunteers for UCF's Campus Activities Board.
But Rock and the others learned what it was like to read a contract, book a performer and take control to sponsor a major event for their fellow students — all useful skills for those who want to in the entertainment industry someday. "Producing events in an 8,000-person venue definitely looks good on a resume," said Michael Pentrack, the 22-year-old UCF senior in charge of the show. The Feb. 26 concert, which co-headlined rappers Kid Ink and Hoodie Allen, was almost 100 percent student-driven, said the board's adviser Lamar Walker. The day of the show, Pentrack and Rock were in the mostly empty CFE Arena, nine hours before the scheduled concert was to start. A DJ turntable and a set of drums were placed to the side. It sounded like a thunderstorm inside the arena as workers tested the speakers.Rock and the other students were dressed in sweatpants and gym clothes. Pentrack had been here since 5:45 a.m., when the first trucks started arriving. They joined the production crews lifting the pieces of stages in place, helping out to save a bit of extra money on manual labor."
The ones who look like they know what they are doing are the production crew," teased UCF senior Molly Cannistra, 22, of Boca Raton.Cannistra's job was to coordinate all the volunteers and make sure they knew what to wear and where to be when.Months earlier, the student volunteers checked to see what artists had the most social media buzz, who cost the most and who wasn't unavailable. They decided which artists to hire by committee.Rock, 20, had gone grocery shopping with the artists' contracts in hand to buy the candy and munchies that were negotiated. She helped assemble the stage, and later that night, students were expected to collect tickets and help patrons find their seats.Someday, Rock wants to work in management at a radio station. Volunteering for the show has helped her think on her feet and understand the magnitude of planning a large-scale event, she said."It really does show you all the work that has to go through," Rock said.Pentrack arrived at UCF as a pre-medical major."
