Trident is Britain's nuclear weapons system. It's made up of four submarines - one of which is on patrol at all times - carrying up to 40 nuclear warheads on board. Each of these warheads is eight times more powerful than the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima. Not only are nuclear weapons immoral and illegal under international law as they kill indiscriminately, they are strategically irrelevant in the face of the actual threats we face today.
suitsupply hoodieThe Government's National Security Strategy identifies international terrorism, cyber-attacks and natural hazards as greater threats than nuclear war.

Trident is also very expensive. The government is in favour of replacing Trident at a cost of at least £100 billion, with the Chair of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee estimating a total of £167 billion. This money would be enough to fully fund A&E services for 40 years, employ 150,000 new nurses, build 1.5 million affordable homes, build 30,000 new primary schools, or cover tuition fees for 4 million students.Pocket CatShirt PocketChest PocketPocket FuckPocket PussyMischievous CatLord NermalNermal TeeFunnystuffForwardWe're huge fans of creative t-shirts in all their shapes and forms, but even we were surprised by the cute-but-nasty secret hidden in this awesome t-shirt's breast pocket.

sons of anarchy mayans hoodie KIDS Company paid children as young as 10 to have brain scans for experimental neurological research.
timberland men's sherpa lined hoodie sweatshirt GETTYThe charity, which closed a week after accepting a £3million Whitehall bailout this month, arranged for vulnerable youngsters to undergo brain function tests.

It was to prove founder Camila Batmanghelidjh's theory abused children suffered physical changes in the brain which could be reversed by her so called "hug a hoodie" treatment. That idea was made famous following David Cameron's 2006 Tory leader speech when he called for love not ASBOs to deal with nightmare yobs."Hug a hoodie" involved Kids Company showing the affected youths the love and affection they had been deprived of by parents or former carers. But, after initial tests, which also involved children having urine and saliva samples taken, did not back the theory Kids Company pressed on with a series of other research projects. GETTYIt ploughed more than £1.6m into neurological research on violent and anti-social youngsters in the hope of proving that abused children suffered physical brain changes which could trigger aggressive behaviour.Ms Batmanghelidjh is convinced emotionally damaged children bear physical, not just mental scars, to the brain but it can reversed through a treatment involving showing love and care to affected youths.

Despite several projects seeking scientific proof, no conclusive conclusions were reached when it closed last week. However, Express.co.uk can reveal that UCL medics funded through a grant secured by Kids Company had completed a lengthy research programme into the theory involving some of its clients at the time of the closure, and are STILL due to publish their findings. One medic, who carried out separate research for Kids Company, also found "emerging evidence" of a potential link.GETTYBut the lack of firm proof could leave Whitehall, which gave millions to Kids Company each year, open to accusations of funding unproven treatments for vulnerable children, as it was already using the hug-a-hoodie therapy. The first bid to prove the theory was when Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), University College London (UCL) and the Institute of Child Health from 2006, were funded to scan children.Kids Company aided by a charitable trust of investment firm Man Group Plc, paid the hospital £70,000 to oversee at the Institute of Child Health "pilot tests" on a number of scans on 10 childrens' brains, who were aged 10 to 14 at the time, and clients of KIds Company and patients of the hospital.

GETTYA GOSH spokeswoman said: "The aim was to assess whether neural or physiological factors related to antisocial behaviour in these individuals."Results of the research found no link between brain and behaviour in these adolescents."As the number of individuals tested was so small and the result was negative, no link between brain and behaviour was found, the research was not published in the way that scientific research generally is."Kids Company was, however, sent a report detailing the negative findings.Despite the theory not being proven yet, Ms Batmanghelidjh later said in a video debate with fashion designer Katherine Hamnett "love is the most important ingredient” in brain development, and how the charity’s “good quality care could change a damaged brain." The aim was to assess whether neural or physiological factors related to antisocial behaviour in these individuals. "Results of the research found no link between brain and behaviour in these adolescents An information sheet on the GOSH project called: "Neurophysiological markers of antisocial behaviour in adolescents: Changes in brain function and activity related to challenging behaviour in adolescents," released by the hospital under FOI said participants received £10 each time they attended, for up to three-hours written and computer tests, plus expenses.

It said: "We will also take a sample of your saliva by asking you to spit into a small tube and take a urine sample."This type of scan takes a picture of your brain while you lie still on a bed."It said each scan could take 45 minutes and further ones "in a few years" may be requested, but they could pull out at any time. It added the tests had "no known risks" but were covered by a compensation scheme, meaning "if any significant harm happened" they could "claim without having to prove negligence was involved."Tests did not get underway until after October 2008.Despite the negative conclusion, Kids Company in 2010 launched a fundraising bid to raise £1.6m needed for a range of neurological tests on Kids Company's "most violent clients" to be carried out by different academics from UCL, the Institute of Psychiatry, the Anna Freud Centre, University of Oxford and the Tavistock Clinic. It is not known if the whole £1.6m was ever paid out, but in 2011 Kids Company paid Kings College, London, an unknown sum to conduct a study of 23 formerly abused youngsters aged 12 to 20, involving brain scans.

GOSH•UCL•KIDSCOMPANYKids Company also obtained £159,000 from charitable trust the Waterloo Foundation to pay UCL for its study.A UCL spokesman said: "All the research has now been undertaken and the data collected. It was quite a long process. In terms of any results we cannot say as it is still to be written up before it can be published in a scientific journal. It will be quite an interesting judgement on how effective what (Kids Company) was doing when it is finished." No one from the Waterloo Foundation would say if it was made aware of the GOSH findings when the grant was approved. It was detailed at the time in the charity's annual report that the project would use brain scans to "establish any neurological changes in troubled and extremely violent children's brains" and examine the impact of providing "surrogate parenting and loving care" to see if children's brains can adapt to make them less prone to violence.Ms Batmanghelidjh said at the time: "If the maltreatment of children is altering their developmental pathways then we are not dealing with children who are morally flawed."

The public perception is that these children are just like anyone else until they come to the point of doing something bad."Then the public decides these children have made a thought-through decision, when the vast majority will not have thought at all – their violence was almost instinctive."Her ideas were slammed in 2010 by Professor Raymond Tallis, a philosopher and former doctor as leading to the removal of responsibility for criminal acts.He said: "I do not think brain scans will add anything to what we already know. The trouble is that that leads to a general sort of claim that 'My brain made me do it'. The neuro-mitigation of blame has to be treated with suspicion."Ms Batmanghelidjh stood by Kids Company carrying out extensive neurological research. She said: "I am disappointed the UCL results were not out before we had to close, but we were sent some other results that were very positive."She provided a report of March 2012 Kids Company-funded research findings of Heledd Hart, of the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College.Mr Hart concluded there was "consistent evidence childhood maltreatment is associated with neuropsychological impairments in academic achievement, IQ, memory, and emotion processing."
