The cast of “Glee” did not make it into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in November, but merchandise based on the popular Fox television series is making it into Macy’s. A line of clothing inspired by “Glee” is scheduled to go on sale this weekend at all Macy’s locations that sell apparel. That’s more than 600 stores. The clothes, made by Awake, will sell for $19.99 to $34.99 and are predominantly T-shirts and hoodies. The line is the result of a deal between the Macy’s division of Macy’s Inc. and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, part of the News Corporation. Fox Broadcasting, which has renewed “Glee” for two more seasons, is also owned by the News Corporation. Macy’s has sold “a lot of licensed products” in the past, said Martine Reardon, executive vice president for marketing at Macy’s, but they have almost always been aimed at children and juveniles. The “Glee” line, by contrast, is meant for juniors, a retail term that refers to shoppers ages 16 to 24, and sometimes as old as 30.
There are also plans for windows of Macy’s stores to display the “Glee” merchandise. And three cast members of “Glee” — Kevin McHale, who plays Artie; Heather Morris, who plays Brittany; and Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays Tina — are to appear at the Macy’s in the Beverly Center in Los Angeles on Aug. 21, Ms. Reardon said. There were reports last fall that the “Glee” cast was to have been part of the parade. But the discussions apparently did not take into account that NBC, which broadcasts the parade each year, does not usually feature casts of shows that appear on other networks. Whatever was the cause of the lack of “Glee” in the parade last year, Ms. Reardon said there were no plans to include the cast in the parade this year. Fox Consumer Products is concentrating on partnerships with better-quality retailers for “Glee” merchandise. It’s a landmark day for fashion! Instead, it is a line of souvenirs for those that enjoy the very popular Glee TV show.  This clothing is just a little something for the fans, which number in the millions.  That means, the sellers of this line, Macy's and FOX , hope to make more than a little something to bolster their revenues.   Although, this line is sized, marketed and priced for the younger (under 30) set, I saw all ages of consumers at the Glee launch yesterday. The pieces will be priced from  $19.99 to $34.99 and sold at over 600 Macy's stores.  So what can you expect? Lots of Tee shirts with Gleek logos, hoodies and even a Cheerio uniform top ala character Sue Sylvester.  Ironically, I don't believe any of the Glee cast menbers were wearing clothes from the clothing line. Over 200 hundred fans waited yesterday for the doors to open at Macy's in the Beverly Center to get a glimpse of three of the show's cast members,  plus autographs and some goodies from the line provided by Macy's. I spoke with a group of fans (Gleeks) as they waited in line for the Macy's event to start.
