Judge says Worcester protestor can't wear Black Lives Matter shirt during trial (Video) Protestor Told Not To Wear Black Lives Matter Shirt In Court on November 09, 2015 at 2:13 PM, updated WORCESTER - Four words on a sweatshirt led to four protestors again arguing for their rights to free speech after a judge ruled a Black Lives Matter protestor could not wear clothes with that message during his trial.

Jones wore a white sweatshirt reading "Bulletproof, Black Lives Matter" in gold lettering. When Central District Court Judge Robert Pellegrini realized what his shirt read, he ruled that none of the four protestors facing trial could wear shirts with that message during the trial. "Is that appropriate to wear in front of a jury? Why isn't that unfair to the commonwealth?

"I don't know how to distinguish between the message sent by a Black Lives Matter sweatshirt and a uniform." Gibbs' defense attorney Hector Piniero said his feeling was that clothing was "protected free speech." The lawyers planned to work together to fight the ruling. Pellegrini said he made the order in the interest of fairness to both the defense and prosecution. The prosecution agreed to have police officers wear plain clothes when testifying in the trial. Outside the courtroom, Jones said he believes the judge was illegally denying his first amendment rights. "What the judge's behavior seemed to show was it was offensive to him in some kind of way," Jones said. "That four words could disrupt a court in such a way was impressive to me." Jones also noted that one of the Black Lives Matter supporters, who held signs outside the courthouse and then went inside to watch the court case, was ordered by a trial court security officer to turn her "Black Lives Matter" shirt inside out before entering the courthouse.

When asked about the incident, trial court employees directed questions to Robin Yancey, the regional director of security for the trial courts. Yancey did not immediately return a call for comment.Textbooks, Washington University in St. Louis merchandise, and a wide range of items are available in Washington University campus stores.
