The first time the 32-year-old Brownlow medalist remembers his father Terry hitting his mother Dianne he was four years old.'I remember Mum being on the floor in the hallway; he had repeatedly hit her, and she was trying to crawl away from him,' Bartel told the Herald Sun. The birth of Jimmy and Nadia Bartel's first child Aston (all pictured) has prompted the Geelong Cat's star to take a public stand against domestic violence The Brownlow medalist (pictured here with wife Nadia) has revealed his father was abusive toward his family when he was young The new dad, pictured here with his son, says he doesn't understand how people can hurt the ones they loveHe said his eldest sister Olivia tried to intervene.'I remember Olivia trying to push him away from Mum, and he physically threw her against the wall, like a rag doll, which is hard to comprehend,' Bartel said. Olivia was 10 at the time, Bartel's other older sister Emma ran and hid under the bed. When four-year-old Bartel went to stand between his mum and dad he too was tossed aside.

'He belted Mum one more time before he left,' he said. This abuse at the hand of Terry Bartel came three years after his mother had escaped from the tumultuous relationship. 'People often say to women, ''Why don't you leave him?'' Well, Mum did, and it still happened,' he said. The football star (pictured here with his son) says his first memory of violence was at the tender age of four when his father stood over his mother in the hallway and belted her Bartel didn't know the full extent of his father's abuse until her was 16, in fact he idolised himBartel was the youngest of the three children and admits he didn't fully understand the details of his mother and father's violent history until he was 16 when he started asking questions. He found out his father had owed gambling syndicates up to $100,000 at one point and that he had let them come after his mother and sisters for revenge. And he learnt his father had assaulted his grandparents the day Olivia was born.He also learnt his father only beat his mother when she wasn't looking.

Bartel and his sisters cut ties with their father after he became aggressive when Olivia wouldn't let him see her first child, Hunter.Bartel said he only saw him once after that before he died of cancer in 2010. The AFL player (here with Nadia) didn't go to his own father's funeral as he had scratched him from his life at 21Bartel and his wife Nadia became parents in November 2015 which has prompted the player's action against domestic violence. The couple, who met at Melbourne's F1 Grand Prix in 2008, were married in February 2014 in a country wedding in Victoria. After Nadia gave birth to Aston she described him as 'perfect in every way'.Bartel says he can't imagine being violent toward his wife or their son Aston. The football star who made his AFL debute in 2002, become a triple premiership player, Brownlow medal winner, Norm SMith medalist and two-time all Australian has labelled domestic abusers as 'frauds'.The well-known football talent says domestic abusers are not 'real men'.
