They play a radio-friendly, cruisey brand of pop-metal, with strong lyrical themes of affirmation, credence, self-belief and vivacious gratitude for the joy of living. They have undergone a bit of a change up of late, with star vocalist Lacey Sturn having announced she was leaving the outfit shortly before the release of their third album, “New Horisons” in October 2012. Sturm was the soaring voice that brought Flyleaf to mainstream success with the powerful singles “All Around Me” off their 2005 debut, which climbed to No.40 in the Billboard Hot 100, “Again” off their second album Memento Mori (2009), and the title track off “New Horizons”, which bassist Pat Seals said describes looking towards an uncertain future with hope.

He said it is one of Flyleaf’s best tracks to come out. Kristen May took the reigns as the new lead vocalist after Sturm’s departure and has ushered the band into a new era. Their latest album, “Between the Stars” released in September 2014, is testament to their talents as an outfit. Their current configuration is May on lead vocals and keyboards, Seals on bass and backing vocals, Jared Hartmann on guitar, James Culpepper on drums and Sameer Bhattacharya on guitar, keyboards and piano.

The key theme of the album, like that “New Horisons” preceding it, is triumphing in the face of adversity, of retaining composure in periods of uncertainty and of staying true to one’s faith throughout. While the transition into the new arrangement with May as the lead vocalist was not spotless – many fans were shocked and had doubts about May being “Christian” enough, due to her efforts to reach out to the broader scene – they have pulled together and put out perhaps their greatest achievement yet and stayed true to the morals for which they are known.

What did your September look like? Publication: September 20th 2016 by Random House Books for Young Readers ARC provided by Blog Tour I am Henrietta Howel. The first female sorcerer in hundreds of years. Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, she’s shocked when instead of being executed, she’s invited to train as one of Her Majesty’s royal sorcerers. Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London, Henrietta is declared the chosen one, the girl who will defeat the Ancients, bloodthirsty demons terrorizing humanity.

She also meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, handsome young men eager to test her power and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her. As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves? Henrietta or Netti to her friends has the ability to use fire, but she keeps this hidden since women who were seen using magic were killed. Henrietta is only found out because she uses her ability to save her friend Rook from being killed, after that she is asked to train to become a sorcerer. Henrietta is thrust into a new world, living under the same roof as a number of young men who are also training to be members of the Queens Royal Sorcerers, there were a number of possible romances here, but Netti never let that stop her from her goal. Netti faces roadblock after roadblock from both her classmates and other men who see her as something that is not part of the natural order of being a sorcerer.

She didn’t let any of this deter her. She was determined to keep going, even if she did have doubts in the back of her head. Nettie finds out things about herself and her past while she undergoes training, which makes her question why the laws are the way they are when it comes to those that can use magic. Her choice will not only affect her but it can possibly affect her relationship with Rook and the other members of the Royal Sorcerers. I do have a bunch of questions that I do hope will be answered in the next book. What are the Ancients? What exactly is the difference between Sorcerers and Magicians? What is happening to Rook and his “curse”? I am looking forward to the next book, and I can’t wait to see what happens with Nettie, Rook and the guys. Labyrinth Lost (Brooklyn Brujas #1) Expected publication: September 6th 2016 by Sourcebooks Fire ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin. The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland… What’s the saying, “Be careful what you wish for?” Alex found this out the hard way when she wished for her magic to be gone, she instead loses her family. Feeling guilty for what she did, she takes off for Los Lagos to get them back. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book, knowing nothing about Brujas and Brujos, I found this to be a fun read. Alex just wants to be “normal” and not have her life revolve around the magic that runs in her family, she goes on about her mother and sisters and how they have all adjusted to living their lives with their magic and their daily going-ons.

The family is all looking forward to Alex’s Deathday party, where she will finally wake up her powers, but the family is going to be in for a bit if a surprise. Alex changes the chat and instead of awakening her magic, she banished them all to Los Lagos. Alex, with the help of Nova a boy she has crossed paths with a few times prior to this is dragged along to Los Lagos, since he did have a part in all of this happening. Los Lagos makes me think of Wonderland on so many levels (which is a good thing from my POV) One person that I wish I saw more of was Rishi, she is a true friend through and through, girl jumps into a portal to follow Alex, no questions asked. I wish I had a friend like her when I was growing up. The relationship between Alex and Rishi is cute and sweet. The ending was not what I was fully expecting, which I’m happy to say, I cannot wait to see what Alex is going to face next after she finally excepts her abilities and her importance, and how things will go on with her family and friends.
