The ship hosted over 30 guests who enjoyed learning about the operations of a hydrographic survey vessel and everyday ship activities. The guests and crew sailed down Gastineau Channel to Taku Inlet to view the Taku Glacier and along the way demonstrated small boat operations with the deployment and recovery of a survey launch. It was a fun-filled day for all and a great way to demonstrate the daily demands of working on a hydrographic ship. We would like to thank all of the family and friends who joined us for the day. Photo Credit: Ensign Daniel HelmricksNOAA Ship FairweatherWhile conducting hydrographic surveys, NOAA Ship Fairweather deploys CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) casts to measure the sound velocity profile of the water column. This is important in measuring ocean depth as the sonar uses sound to measure the distance to the seafloor. Having accurate profiles allows the survey team to see changes in the sound velocity in different sections of the survey area and at different depths.
