In ESN, I have been involved in various activities of local, national and international level since 2010. I am a member of the International Committee for Education and a member of the Network Care Team as well as a very proud member of the Eduk8 community. In my non-ESN life (Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?) I’m studying Master’s in Business Management and Economics and I am very passionate about photography, travelling and pretty much anything adventurous. I am the Chairing Facilitator for the upcoming NEP, so I'll take care of all the technical stuff (if you present anything at the event, we'll become good friends ;)). You may have heard before that I am a rocket scientist but I’ll make sure that this year's edition of NEP won’t be a rocket science for you!” Jan Lukačevič - Chairing Facilitator Stephan van de Ven - Vice Chair “My name is Stephan van de Ven and I will be your Vice-chair for NEP Oulu. I am from the section ESN Inholland Diemen (next to Amsterdam), the Netherlands.
I have been around the Network for little over a year and seen a lot of different places since then. I am a proud member of NEC, part of the Eduk8ers pool and National Training Coordinator for ESN the Netherlands. This will be the first time to come to Funland and am ready to make it a memorable one.”My name is Panayiotis Papageorgiou (AKA Panos PapaG) from Greece and currently living in UK. Member of ESN since September 2010 and I have been involved in local, National and International level, former Vice-Chair of Finance Committee of ESN International for the last two years and former National board member in ESN Greece and ESN UK in the position of National Treasurer. I’m currently member of Network Care team and in my non- ESN Life I’m involved with Shipping and Maritime studies and industries. I’m happy that it will be my first time attending NEP and also visiting first time Finland!” Panayiotis Papageorgiou - Main ChairDear Lifehacker,I'm in the market for a new smartphone and would like to get one cheap.
I'm worried about buying it from eBay or Craigslist for fear I'll get a stolen phone. Is there a way I can check before I buy? Dear Lam,As you're no doubt aware, buying a stolen phone is not just a morally troubling problem, but if the phone is reported, you could lose your ability to use it at all. If your device is reported stolen, carriers will blacklist the ESN for starters. That is assuming, of course, that it doesn't get flagged and investigated when you try to activate it. It's an all-around bad situation to be in. Fortunately, you can still sidestep the hot property. Your first course of action when buying online is to make sure that the person you're buying from is legitimate. Previously mentioned Swappa is one of the best places you can buy used smartphones. Unlike eBay and Craigslist, if you end up buying a stolen phone on Swappa, you can report the seller to get their account suspended or banned, as well as appeal to PayPal to get your money back. While eBay also uses PayPal and offers some protection, in general the responsibility is on you the buyer to check to make sure you're not buying stolen property.
Needless to say, this can be a challenge. Of course, if you'd prefer to buy phones from Craigslist or eBay, you can still follow basic rules for staying safe. Only buy products where real photos are available (as opposed to product images), ask questions, and do research on the seller as well as the product. If you do decide to purchase from an unknown seller on Craigslist, ask them if you can verify the ESN/IMEI of the phone. While obviously no seller wants to have their motives grilled on the spot, you also don't want to end up with stolen property (and they should understand given the circumstances). It doesn't hurt to ask while you're emailing if they would mind allowing you to check. If they do, great. If not, you can decide for yourself how much you're willing to risk it. You can check a device's ESN or IMEI number at Swappa. There is a limit (20 per hour), but you'll probably never have a need to hit it. Alternatively, you can call up your carrier to check an ESN.
Not all carriers will do ESN checks, but you can call up many of them to ask. Alternatively, you can ask to meet at a carrier location so you can activate your phone as soon as you buy it. The seller might find it annoying to stick around while you activate your phone, but it may also dissuade anyone selling stolen phones who won't want to be put on the spot. Of course, if you want to make extra sure that the phone you're buying is already legally activated and ready for use, you can always pick up someone else's contract. We've previously discussed services like CellSwapper and CellTradeUSA that allow you to take what's left on someone else's service plan. They get to leave their carrier without paying an ETF, and you get a shorter contract length and a phone that's much more certain to work on the carrier you want because it's still active. The downside to this method, of course, is that phone selection can get a little sparse. Not every contract that's available to swap actually has a device attached, and frequently the phones you get are free, rather than being sold outright, since the main thing being bartered is the contract.
