When SpaceX successfully landed a rocket booster vertically in December 2015, a group of Carnegie Mellon University mechanical engineering students were particularly pleased.

Months earlier, they had earned prizes from the spacecraft company for their rocket control designs, part of the final project for the department's nonlinear controls course. The course, taught by Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Koushil Sreenath, required students to design controllers that tested rockets landing in simulation. Sreenath framed the project as a contest and SpaceX offered to award prizes to the top three teams. The students submitted their controller designs online and were evaluated for landing a rocket starting from various initial configurations — upright, ninety-degree tilt, completely inverted and others (watch video). The first place winning design solutions optimized accuracy of the landing, enabled vertical landing, lowered the velocity of impact on the landing pad and optimized the amount of fuel left in the rocket upon landing. The team included students Donghoon Son, David Colmenares, and Onder Erin. The course focused on using math to analyze and design controllers for nonlinear systems.

Real-world problems and hands-on learning motivated the students. “This hands-on learning was critical for students to see the abstract theory they learned from the course in action,” said Sreenath. To promote real-world application, Sreenath introduced the problem of landing a rocket booster engine after it delivers a satellite into the upper atmosphere, which is one of SpaceX’s ventures. The implications of these kinds of projects are huge — reusable rockets will greatly reduce the cost of space exploration, up to one hundred times. Rocket boosters usually fall back to earth, sometimes burning up when re-entering the atmosphere, and land in the ocean where ships recover them for later reuse. But advances in rocket control enable booster engines to re-ignite after separation to attempt powered descent and landing. To date, SpaceX and Blue Origin are the only organizations to have demonstrated booster landings successfully. Prashanth Krishnan, a master’s student in mechanical engineering and a student in the course, began the conversations with SpaceX that eventually resulted in the sponsored prizes.
