We saw goofy Pete Carroll try an onside kick at the start of overtime. Way to make up for the confusion and the slant pass that lost the Super Bowl. It looked like Carroll had retired the trophy for worst coaching of the weekend until we saw highly respected Giants coach Tom Coughlin blow the Sunday night game in Dallas with a series of skull-imploding strategic blunders. Coughlin got no help from quarterback Eli Manning, who sounded like a guy you wouldn’t want taking your SATs for you, but it was impossible to imagine such a communication breakdown with Belichick in charge.Coughlin is a serious man and a great coach who has beaten Belichick in two Super Bowls. He is one of the few coaches in the NFL who doesn’t melt into a puddle at the sight of the Hoodie. Another fearless football boss is Rex Ryan, who’ll take a shot at beating Belichick in reenergized Buffalo this weekend. It should be fun. Warm drinks and trash cans for everyone.But most weeks it’s no contest. It’s the proverbial chess vs. checkers.
