Congratulations go out to Year 7 student Kelis Richardson for winning a bronze medal at the World Championships. Kelis said “the feeling of being presented with such a big medal is unexplainable. I won my first fight 9-0 which really built up my confidence My trainers, who are both black belts, Mr James Welsh and Mr Colin Boxsall were guiding me all the way. In my second fight I was 4 points down but suddenly overtook and won at the last minute. My last fight was the hardest. It was against a girl who is one belt ahead of me. I scored first and then we were drawing. Unfortunately she scored at the last minute and beat me by one point. I was devastated but I did well and there’s always a next time. That’s how I became 3rd best in the world 2016.” Dan Drayton raced into the top ten of the European Junior Cup at Donnington Park with a career best 7th place finish at the end of an intense 11 laps around the 2.5 mile East Midlands circuit.
Starting from a career best qualifying position of 13th Dan made a great start and was inside the top ten almost immediately. Lapping almost a second faster than he did in qualifying he worked his way forward to claim 9 well deserved points after a truly memorable race that had the union jacks positioned around the circuit waving and the fans at the paddock show raising the roof as he was invited onto the stage in the fanzone after the race. Dan said about his time at Outwood Academy Brumby “I needed time out of school for both my testing sessions and travel for race weekends. The last two years of school were important for my exam preparation, so we had meetings to see how I could do both. The school worked my curriculum to allow time to race, without affecting my attendance. But we had a contract and that was important, if I didn’t meet my grades or continue to achieve in class both in the lesson and with my homework then that privilege would be taken away. We both kept to our agreements and I felt supported, so much so that both the college and my employer have agreed to similar arrangements.
