Credit: Mark Bagley (Marvel Comics)Shortly after Clone Conspiracy #3 revealed Ben Reilly was still alive, rumors emerged that a new ongoing Scarlet Spider series from Peter David and Mark Bagley would debut after the Spider-Man crossover event. That David and Bagley would writing and illustrating a new Spider-Man tie-in was soon confirmed. Now the other half of that rumor has come to pass, as this April sees Ben Reilly back in the hoodie once again in Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider. In an exclusive interview with CBR, David talked about how Peter Parker’s clone, after Clone Conspiracy, will struggle with his identity, especially after having adopted the identity of his villainous creator, Miles Warren, a.k.a. the Jackal. The second Scarlet Spider and Ben’s fellow clone, Kaine Parker, also will be in the series. It turns out the end of Clone Conspiracy will have Ben being presumed dead, but Kaine, refusing to believe this, will, according to David “[feel] that it’s up to him to be the one to track [Ben] down.”

(Yes, looks like Marvel spoiled the outcome of another one of their own events before it officially ends yet again). Ben also will face new adversaries in the form of one Cassandra Mercury and her associate, Slate, and will also have his own “Aunt May” named “Aunt June.” The comic book related website also revealed Bagley’s cover for Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1, featuring Ben in his new costume.

For comparisons sake, this is what Ben, as the Scarlet Spider, originally looked like:This, from the cover of Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1 released by Marvel, is what Ben Reilly, as the Scarlet Spider, will look like after The Clone Conspiracy:Which, in both style and design–especially the very noticeable mouth–bears more than a passing resemblance to this guy:Who is this you might ask?

r5 hoodie guitarFirst appearing in Spectacular Spider-Man #222, Spidercide, or “Freakface” as Miles Warren called him, not only had Peter’s spider powers but, very much like the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, also had shape-shifting abilities. Which, of course, included altering his appearance and clothing.Likewise, as Spider-Man’s clone, Spidercide also had severe identity issues about being “the real Peter Parker” which drove him psychotic.

This seems particularly relevant in light of what Peter David reveals Ben Reilly’s internal struggle in the new series:[Ben Reilly’s] trying to decide what to do with his Jackal personality, and he is literally being haunted by his earlier incarnations. He has his Scarlet Spider identity on one shoulder, urging him to follow his better angels, and the Jackal on the other hand, trying to get him to return to the path that led him to disaster. He’s trapped in the middle, endeavoring to balance the two. Of all the characters I’ve written who are having identity problems — and God knows, I’ve done a few — Ben is easily the most unhinged. Finally, there’s 2013’s “Sibling Rivalry,” a two-part crossover in Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #2 and Scarlet Spider Vol. 2 #20, where Doctor Octopus (as the Superior Spider-Man) and Kaine went up against the Jackal. The conclusion of this story reveals the Jackal took samples of SpOck’s and Kaine’s DNA to create “Spidercide 2.0.”

As both series ended a short time afterwards, later Spider-Man comics never revisited or followed up on this bombshell. But maybe The Clone Conspiracy will?Of course, this all speculation based on some very circumstantial evidence. Still, the idea Clone Conspiracy brought Ben Reilly back from the dead is already dubious, considering how, as revealed in Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 4 #22, he’s technically a Ben Reilly clone who Miles Warren repeatedly killed and recreated twenty-seven times. It’s even more so if Clone Conspiracy then reveals “Ben Reilly” as recreated and brainwashed Spidercide. If so, it may prove difficult for fans to embrace a new Scarlet Spider comic if it doesn’t actually star the original Scarlet Spider. Then again, clones in Spider-Man have always been about misdirection.Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1 by Peter David and Mark Bagley will be available from Marvel Comics in April, 2017. & FREE Shipping on eligible orders.
