A gay couple were left furious after they were called 'battys' by a JD Sports shop assistant.Gavin Matthews, 35, and his partner had just walked into the Eltham branch in South East London when he claims the comment was made. The legal assistant immediately complained about the use of the word - a Jamaican term of abuse for homosexuals. Complaint: Gavin Matthews claims he and his partner were called 'battys' by a shop assistant in the Eltham branch of JD SportsJD Sports this afternoon says it 'deplores discrimination of any kind' and has suspended two members of staff pending a disciplinary hearing.Describing the incident, Mr Matthews said: 'As we walked in my partner said "hi guys" and went to look at the trainers.'They blocked my way for a while and the guy on the right side said "they're battys innit".'I couldn't believe it, then he started laughing like he thought he was clever.' Mr Matthews, who works in Eltham, immediately told his partner they were leaving and reported the incident, which happened on Easter Sunday, to JD Sports' customer services department.

I will certainly get this matter looked into for you with the store in question.'Mr Matthews added: 'What has made the whole thing worse is the generic response I've got, it's basically calling me a liar.'It's obvious that JD Sports doesn't care about its own staff committing hate crimes and is more concerned about protecting them.' HOW JAMAICAN TERM CAME TO UK In Jamaican culture, the derogatory term 'batty boy' refers to men who are homosexual.The phrase was brought to Britain by Jamaican immigrants after the Second World War while it is also used in North America.The term itself is derived from the Jamaican Patois word for ‘bottom’.

Galop, an LGBT anti-violence and abuse charity has criticised JD Sports over its handling of the incident.Service manager Peter Kelly said: 'Any homophobic abuse is unacceptable and a large company like JD Sports needs to investigate this incident properly.'Homophobic abuse intended to cause anyone distress is a police matter, this incident just shows that homophobia is still prevalent in society today.'A JD Sports spokesman told MailOnline this afternoon that the company had since spoken to Mr Matthews.'Mr Matthews informed JD Sports of his complaint via the online customer service centre following the incident on Sunday 5 April,' he said.'A new member of agency staff, who was working on a trial period at the time, unfortunately failed to properly escalate the complaint to the senior management team, who became aware of this incident on Friday 17 April. This individual is no longer working on behalf of JD Sports.'We deplore discrimination of any kind and take this matter very seriously and took action as soon as this mistake was realised.
