A man who contracted leprosy in Florida has spoken out about his ordeal to dispel stigma surrounding the disease.Mel Riser, who lives with his wife and children in Austin, Texas, lost his ability to walk and see after becoming infected with the disease.His doctors believe he caught it through a scratch from an armadillo - an animal known to carry the virus. Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is an incredibly rare condition caused by slow multiplying bacteria which can destroy sufferers' eyesight and all sensation in their skin. Agonizing ordeal: Mel Riser (pictured), who lives with his wife and children in Austin, Texas, lost his ability to walk and see after becoming infected with leprosy last yearIt is most typically associated with Asia and the Middle Ages, when and where the disease was most prevalent.But unbeknownst to many Americans, the infectious condition thrives in the South - particularly in the state's abundant armadillo population.'I was kind of floored,' Mr Riser told CBS, remembering the moment a doctor diagnosed him with leprosy. 

The diagnosis came after months of neurological tests with 15 different doctors. Mr Riser's first symptom was numbness in his feet. But no physician could pinpoint the root cause. Eventually a spot appeared on his ankle, then his ankle started to turn white and the hair was falling out his leg.He went to see a dermatologist - who instantly recognized the symptoms as leprosy. 'He said the only thing this could be is leprosy. You're the second patient I've seen in my entire career here in Austin,' Mr Riser remembered. The doctor said it is most likely Mr Riser contracted the disease from a scratch from an armadillo while he was working for NASA on Merritt Island, Florida. Armadillos are perfect havens for leprosy.Leprosy is a notoriously weak disease - 95 percent of people are immune to it because the pathogen cannot survive in normal body temperatures.However, armadillos - with a body temperature of 90F - are not too hot, not too cold. Seemingly innocuous: After months of neurological tests with 15 different doctors, Mel developed this spot on his leg.

A dermatologist instantly recognized it as leprosyIt means armadillos commonly carry the bacteria - making scratches incredibly dangerous for humans.After his diagnosis, Mr Riser's condition rapidly deteriorated: he had to walk with a cane, he got cataracts in his eyes, and he had sores on his legs.  Incredibly, his condition was caught early.But his course of treatment - three kinds of antibiotics and two nerve-stimulating medications - took a year to complete, forcing him to put his life on hold.'When you tell people you've got it they kind of step back and say 'maybe I shouldn't be too close to you',' Mr Riser told CBS. Finally, a year later, his cataracts have gone, he no longer needs a cane, and his skin is clear.   'The good news is it's curable,' Mr Riser said.'I'm cured. No more red spots. I don't have a cane. The feelings come back in my feet and my hands.'
