The AES mission is to promote the science and practice of audio, by bringing leading people and ideas together. The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology.

Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research. Currently, over 12,000 members are affiliated with more than 75 AES professional sections and more than 95 AES student sections around the world. Section activities may include guest speakers, technical tours, demonstrations and social functions. Through local AES section events, members experience valuable opportunities for professional networking and personal growth. I have several fond memories of my first AES convention, but one looms large. Let’s not bother with calculating how long ago it was. Today—if you are working entirely in the box—double-clicking opens your session exactly as it was when you last worked on it. Not so, in the analog days of my first convention. Mixes could be recreated exactly as they were, but it was a labor of love.

Assistant engineers would carefully document the position of every knob, switch, slider, and thing-a-ma-gig on the console, and on every piece of outboard gear used. The paper-based notes could then be used to recall that mix at a later date—two hours of work, not two clicks of a mouse. The overall function and direction of the AES is established by the Society’s Board of Governors, which is elected by voting members of the Society. Board meeting are held at each U.S. convention, and additional business may be conducted electronically throughout the year. The Board of Governors consists of: (1) the Society’s corporate officers (President; (3) the eight Regional Vice-Presidents (Eastern USA/Canada; (4) and eight Governors-at-Large In between full meetings of the Board, the Society’s corporate officers (also known as the “Executive Committee”) are responsible for oversight of the AES. Daily administrative affairs at the Society’s headquarters are managed by a full-time Executive Director appointed by the corporate officers.
