Tragedy: Adrian Barker, 52, became overwhelmed with grief and guilt following the death of 23-year-old Joe Harrison at ACB Hydraulics (pictured) in Cheadle, Staffordshire, on October 6, 2013, an inquest has heardYesterday, Mr Barker's relatives told the hearing the managing director had been 'traumatised' by his treatment by Health and Safety inspectors brought in to investigate Mr Harrison's death.Mr Barker's devastated widow Susanne said: 'The HSE became increasingly unreasonable in their questioning and manner. They were overpowering and inconsiderate.'Adrian wasn't prepared for this harassment, he was traumatised, they must have known this would be mentally exhausting. Anyone close to us knows we lived for and loved each other.'Adrian would never have left me this way had he not been driven to.'Despite Mrs Barker's comments, the coroner concluded that 'on the balance of probability', the HSE's conduct was not a factor in Mr Barker's death, and recorded a verdict of suicide. Devastating accident: Mr Harrison (pictured) was killed when a crane collapsed onto him at the factoryMr Barker was found dead at the premises of ACB Hydraulics on October 6, 2013 - less than a fortnight after Mr Harrison was killed when a crane collapsed onto him at the factory.

Following the horrific discovery, Staffordshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation. The majority of Mr Barker's family's criticism of the HSE stemmed from events which took place on October 4, when inspectors tried to obtain further documentation as part of their inquiry. But North Staffordshire coroner Ian Smith said yesterday: 'I am totally sure Mr Barker hanged himself, intending to take his life. 'It was planned and carried out as efficiently as the engineer he was.'He would have felt enormous guilt at what happened and would have considered himself responsible for a young man's death.'Criticism was levelled at the HSE for the way it approached the investigation and dealt with a number of individuals. 'Inevitably, a death at work will be investigated and employers may be told it will include consideration of corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter as well as potential offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act. 'It is hardly surprising then that employers and others feel as though they are criminals or thought of as such.'However, I do not consider Mr Barker's death was due to the actions or failures of the HSE inspectors.'In my opinion, there is no need for me to take the matter any further, but I am sure this case will be the subject of much thought and consideration by the HSE.'Despite the verdict

, Mrs Barker remains unhappy about the investigation carried out by the HSE. Scene: Today, Mr Barker's devastated family told the hearing that the businessman - who had built his firm (pictured) up from scratch had been 'traumatised' by his treatment by Health and Safety inspectorsBut Samantha Peace, director for HSE, said: 'Our sympathies are with Mr Barker's family. His death has had a profound effect on all those involved in the case.'I am satisfied our inspectors acted professionally and responsibly while making inquiries, as the law requires them to do, into the death of Joseph Harrison.'The coroner ruled Mr Barker's death was not due to any actions or failings by HSE and our inspectors could not have anticipated it. 'Our inspectors receive extensive training in how to investigate such incidents, ensuring they show sensitivity and act with impartiality at all times. 'The coroner made no criticism of that training.'Our joint investigation with the police into the death of Joseph Harrison was launched to ensure others were not put at risk, and to establish whether anyone should be held to account for the fatal injuries he sustained.
