She then nodded to her lover after hearing more.Carol Summers, prosecuting said: ‘The victim was 69 years old at the time of this offence and it is an entirely deplorable attack.‘He was making his way after he had been to watch the cricket at the Oval and took the overground from the Oval to London Bridge.‘He had been with his friends at the cricket, had about four or five drinks at the Oval and was in good spirits.’She explained he had boarded the last carriage and struck up a conversation to a man sat next to him, and the pair talked about cricket and sport.hoodie tygAfter a while, he noticed a blonde woman move from down the carriage to sit opposite him and noted she seemed upset and angry and shouted: ‘I am a woman, what’s your point?’.She then nodded towards her partner, Dalton, who moved up the carriage towards her, raising his right arm back before punching Mr Bonello in the face and allegedly twisting his fist in the victims eye socket.
The pair were then spotted laughing on CCTV footage, before disappearing down the train and disembarking at Deptford. They hid as they called for a taxi and later fled in the vehicle, but a witness to the incident had been able to follow them and took down the vehicle registration for the police. Dalton struck his victim after hearing apparent disparaging comments about female players at WimbledonOfficers later attended their address in Belvedere where they found Dalton.Ms Summers added: ‘The victim had 12 stitches in his eye and a large cut.‘An eyeball was reddened and bruised and an eye socket fractured.‘He describes getting a flashing sensation in his right eye that would happen at any time.‘He got severe headaches as a result of this attack, but these have tailed off now.‘His sense of smell comes and goes, he says.’Dalton held his head in his hands staring at the floor and sighed as the sentence was announced while his partner and mother looked on from the public gallery.
Reviews of CCTV footage showed that Dalton, who works as a planning officer for more than £26,000 a year, had not used a knuckleduster.Mr Bonello said in a victim impact statement: ‘I live alone and there is not a day I do not think and relive the incident. ‘Normal and good people do not carry knives or attack other people coming up to 70.‘There is too much of this type of thing going on.‘I am now very conscious of late night travelling. I keep myself to myself as much as possible.’Mr Bonello exclaimed ‘first time he’s been caught’ as Dalton’s defence barrister Joanna Hardy told the court that he has no previous convictions and was of good character. She said: ‘This is a 27 year old man, a professional, in full time employment with a long term partner who is in court for the first time.‘He has never done it before.’She added: ‘The effect of coming to court, packing his bags and explaining to his family and his employers what he has done has affected him immensely.‘
He is incredibly hopeful that this court will give him a second chance.‘This was his first mistake and so far his last.‘He wishes to offer the court is most sincere apologises for being here.‘It was a grave and series error of judgment and it is a desperate shame for everyone involved.’Dalton sobbed as Judge Henry Blacksell QC, told him: ‘Many sorts of people come to the crown court for various reasons. Judge Henry Blacksell QC told Dalton his behaviour was 'dreadful', at Blackfriars Crown Court, pictured‘It is very sad that you are here at all. You have heard the good things that can be said about you.‘Surprising therefore Mr Dalton that I am having to listen to this at all and a surprising aspect of this is that, as you heard me say, a man with your sort of background resorted to this behaviour. It was dreadful.’He added: ‘This was public transport. People do not have options.‘We all in this city and other cities too have to use it to go to and from places of employment and places where we live.‘
